Bronze Age axe casting
Sunday 29 August 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm£95
What are the origins of the metal wood working axe? It’s a staple in the bushcrafters tool set, and has been a favoured tool for thousands of years. Bronze first arrived in Britain just over 4000 years ago, and would remain a staple material for tool making for 1000 years.
Join experimental archaeologist Dr. James Dilley to make your own replica early Bronze Age axe head. Make your mould and work the bellows to melt bronze in a crucible before pouring it out. Using authentic decorating and sharpening tools, you can start the process of turning the fresh cast into an effective tool. Images of flanged axes appear on monuments such as Stonehenge, demonstrating their importance to Bronze Age society. Casting metal is a magical experience, and learning about its origins will make for a truly memorable day!
